Located in the southwestern part of Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, Dongtan New City exemplifies South Korea’s policy-driven urban development. High-density apartment complexes have become the prevailing mode of residence, revealing the nation’s deep reliance on apartments not only as a housing policy but also as a cultural norm. Apartments function simultaneously as an engine of economic growth and as a framework that structures daily life and identity.

This project began in 2013 with the aim of archiving the emerging landscape of Dongtan 2 New Town. At that time, the site remained largely vacant, occupied only by the Hanmi Pharmaceutical headquarters and the Riviera Golf Club. Within this undefined and open expanse, I centered my photographic framing on Metapolis—the landmark high-rise complex of Dongtan 1 New Town—and initiated my long-term visual archive.

My practice primarily consists of panoramic photographs produced by merging several to a dozen or so images into a seamless composition. To secure an elevated vantage point and encompass expansive urban views, I routinely carried a ladder in my vehicle. Since 2013, these wide-angle images—often extending up to 180 degrees—have documented the ongoing reconfiguration of terrain, the cycles of architectural emergence and disappearance, and the resilient growth of vegetation reclaiming the built environment.

A particular focus has been the rise and fall of large-scale model housing showrooms, whose demolition is soon followed by the construction of massive apartment complexes. Many frames capture the uneasy coexistence of industrial zones and clusters of residential blocks, reflecting a distinctly Korean logic that privileges proximity between workplace and residence, while also exposing the unsettling dissonance of such juxtapositions.

Ultimately, this body of work constitutes an ongoing archive of South Korea’s urban trajectory—one fundamentally shaped by the apartment as its dominant architectural, economic, and cultural unit.

경기도 화성시 남서부에 조성된 신도시 동탄은 한국의 국가 주도 도시 개발 정책을 대표적으로 보여주는 사례입니다. 고밀도 아파트 단지는 이미 한국인의 주거 양식의 기본으로 자리 잡았으며, 이는 국가적 주택 정책이 아파트에 얼마나 의존하고 있는지를 단적으로 드러냅니다. 아파트는 한국 사회에서 경제 성장의 동력이자 동시에 일상과 정체성을 규정하는 사회적·문화적 틀이 되었습니다.

이 프로젝트는 2013년, 제2동탄 신도시를 아카이브한다는 목적에서 출발했습니다. 당시 제2신도시는 막 착공을 시작한 단계였고, 넓은 부지에는 한미약품 사옥과 리베라 골프장만이 텅 빈 공간에 자리하고 있었습니다. 저는 이 비정형적이고 정의되지 않은 공간 속에서, 이미 완공된 제1신도시의 랜드마크였던 메타폴리스 주상복합 아파트를 사진적 프레이밍의 중심에 두며 기록을 시작했습니다.

제 작업은 주로 몇 장에서 십여 장의 사진을 병합하여 하나의 파노라마로 완성하는 방식으로 이루어집니다. 보다 높은 시점을 확보하기 위해 늘 차량에 사다리를 싣고 다녔으며, 180도에 이르는 광각의 시선으로 인간에 의해 재편되는 지형과 건축물의 생성과 소멸, 그리고 이를 비집고 자라나는 식물의 끊임없는 생장을 기록해왔습니다.

특히 대규모 모델하우스의 등장과 철거, 그리고 그 자리에 들어서는 거대한 아파트 단지들을 장기적으로 추적하며, 도시의 급속한 변화를 아카이브해왔습니다. 또한 하나의 프레임 안에 공장 지역과 아파트 밀집 단지가 동시에 포착되는 장면들은, 직주 근접이라는 효율성을 우선시하는 한국적 사고를 드러내는 동시에 불편하고 이질적인 풍경을 노출합니다.

궁극적으로 이 작업은 아파트라는 건축적 단위가 한국 도시의 풍경과 경제적 구조, 그리고 문화적 정체성을 어떻게 형성해왔는지를 지속적으로 아카이브하는 장기 프로젝트입니다.
