In 2013, Myeong-dong was overflowing with tourists from all over the world, captivated by the allure of Korean culture. As the epicenter of Hallyu and a bustling cultural crossroads, Myeong-dong became a living stage where tourists, with cameras in hand, documented their own unique experiences. Every moment they captured became a part of the city's living archive.

My project is a practice of preserving those moments and the era they represent. My photographs capture the fleeting traces of a decade past: the lingering advertisements of Hallyu stars, the vibrant fashion of travelers from around the world, and the remnants of the foods and goods they enjoyed. All these fragments come together to fulfill photography's core purpose: to document the ever-changing, ephemeral moments of a city.

This lively scene was brought to a halt by the COVID-19 pandemic. The once-crowded streets became eerily empty, revealing a strange void in the flow of time. Yet, Myeong-dong has since reawakened, once again filled with travelers, writing a new chapter of recovery and rebirth.

This work goes beyond simply photographing a street; it is an act of preserving a period in history. To respect the privacy of the people in my photos, their faces are blurred or altered. This is my way of protecting the very individuals who are central to these images, while also sharing this archive with the world.                                                                                            Myeongdong is not merely a geographical location. It is a complex urban palimpsest, continually overwritten, erased, and redrawn over centuries. Myeongdong's identity resides in the dynamic interaction of all its layers: a Joseon-era trading post, a colonial-era hub, a post-war reconstruction site, a bohemian cultural center, a sanctuary of the democracy movement, and today's tourist district.

Myeongdong's true artistic value lies in its continuous evolution. It is an urban canvas that reflects and shapes the collective consciousness of the nation. Each layer adds a new dimension to its complex, beautiful, and at times chaotic story. As such, Myeongdong cannot be defined by a single image; it is an enduring and living work of art in perpetual motion.

2013년, 명동은 한국의 매력에 푹 빠진 전 세계 관광객들로 넘쳐났습니다. 한류의 성지이자 활기 넘치는 문화의 교차로가 된 이곳에서, 관광객들은 저마다 카메라를 들고 자신만의 명동을 기록했죠. 그들의 사진 속에서 명동은 그들의 움직임 하나하나가 담긴 살아있는 무대가 되었습니다.

저는 그 순간들을 포착해 명동이라는 공간 속  '시대'를 기록합니다. 제 사진에는 10년이 훌쩍 지난 한류 스타의 광고판이 여전히 남아 있고, 각양각색의 옷을 입은 관광객들의 모습이 담겨 있으며, 그들이 즐겼던 수많은 것들의 흔적이 녹아있습니다. 이 모든 파편들은 끊임없이 변하는 도시의 찰나를 붙잡아두려는 사진 본연의 역할 그 자체입니다.

이런 활기 넘치던 풍경은 코로나 팬데믹으로 인해 잠시 멈췄습니다. 텅 빈 거리는 시간의 흐름이 단절된 듯한 기묘한 공백을 드러냈습니다. 하지만 명동은 다시 깨어났고, 또 다른 여행객들로 채워지며 회복과 재탄생의 이야기를 써 내려가고 있습니다.

이 프로젝트는 단순히 거리를 찍는 행위를 넘어, 한 시대의 기억을 기록하고 아카이빙하는 작업입니다. 작업에 담긴 모든 사람들의 프라이버시를 존중하기 위해, 작품 속 인물의 얼굴은 블러 처리하거나 변조합니다. 이는 사진의 주인공인 그들을 보호하며 동시에 이 기록을 세상과 나누기 위한 저의 선택입니다.

명동은 단순한 지리적 위치가 아닙니다. 그 것은 수 세기 동안 끊임없이 덧쓰여지고, 지워지고, 다시 그려져 온 복잡한 도시적 팔림프세스트입니다. 명동의 정체성은 조선시대의 교역소, 식민지 시대의 번화가, 전쟁 후의 재건 현장, 보헤미안 문화의 중심지, 민주화 운동의 성지, 그리고 오늘날의 관광 특구에 이르는 모든 층위의 역동적인 상호작용 속에 존재합니다.

명동의 진정한 예술적 가치는 끊임없는 진화하고있습니다.. 명동은 국가의 집단적 의식을 반영하고 형성하는 도시적 캔버스이며. 각각의 층위는 그 복잡하고 아름다우며 때로는 혼란스러운 이야기에 새로운 차원을 더합니다. 이처럼 명동은 단일한 모습으로 정의될 수 없는, 영원히 진행 중인 살아있는 예술 작품으로 자리합니다.
